Discovery Buys HowStuffWorks

Today Reuters is reporting that Discovery, owner of cable channels such as Discovery Channel and Animal Planet to acquire HowStuffWorks for $250 million. HowStuffWorks was started by a professor at North Carolina State University in 1998 that focused on a whole range of content related to consumer reviews, self-help and the know-how information. Like many Internet-related firms, HowStuffWoks makes its money from the advertisement revenue. In return, they provide their loyal readers with the up-to-date information segmented by channel of interests.
As of October 2007, HowStuffWorks received an average of 3.8 unique visitors per month, from a base of approximately 11 million users globally. With this acquisition, Discovery initially plans to integrate HowStuffWorks’s text content with its more than 100,000 hours of documentary and other video footage.
