Network Solutions Is Front Running?

networksolutions

Network Solutions, the former biggest domain name registrar before the emerged of GoDaddy, has launched a new program that enable potential buyers to reserve the domain names available that they searched on their site. Many are saying this is “front-running” or “cybersquatter”, a scheme that used by domain name scammers to register some favorite domain names only with the intention to resell those names for a high profits at later stage.

Under this program, the domain names that are searched and found available on Network Solutions will be reserved to the searchers or potential buyers for a period of 4 days, in spite of the potential buyers have no intention to buy those searched domain names. As a consequence, such the domain name records will be removed from the pool of domain name availability, in other word, no other party can register such domain names in this 4 days provided Network Solutions release back the stated domain names to the registry. Despite the fact that Network Solutions charge much higher domain name registration than the other registrars, i.e. $34.99, the domain name reserved can only be registered through Network Solutions within the duration of 4 days.

Though this program is vulnerable to sabotage and vandalism, Network Solutions insisted that this is a customer protection measure, and all the domains it reserve would only place under construction page, which mean no advertisement will be appeared on these pages.

New Dot рф Domain Name

Internet will soon have a domain name that used Cyrillic letter, i.e. рф, reported by Kommersant. However, this Cyrillic letter only be applied to the Russia’s Web community and expected to be launched in next year. Currently, all the domain names for Internet addresses are Roman letters, with the introduction of the domain with Cyrillic letters will most likely raise some concerns for domain name confusion. Though the introduction of domain name registrations that suffix with international languages like this one might attract great attention, it is inevitably the cybersquatters will take advantage of this golden opportunity.

An Update: Dot Asia Domain

Today Reuters ran an interesting story entitled, “www.sex.asia likely to be Internet domain in demand,” discusses the prospect of dot asia domain business. In fact, the dot asia domain is confirmed to be open for registration started on this October 9. The registration is on the basis that priority registration are limited to registered trademark owners. Apparently, no one will know which name will be the most popular dot asia extension on that day, as individuals, organizations, or the cybersquatters no longer view domain registration or domain parking as a risky business. Instead, they see it as a new opportunity that provide great return.

An Update: Dot Asia Domain Set To Begin In October

This is a follow-up post of my second post in this blog. It look like a new top-level domain, i.e. dot asia is set to begin from this October, according to a news in Singapore. There are certain phases before the dot asia domain will be available for public registration, but the most interesting part is that the first-come, first-served domain registration model is not welcome at this time. For now, I’m concern about the respond of this new domain in Asia, as dot com domain name has became a successful practice whenever a person or an organization in registering the domain of a particular Website. On the domain industry, if success is measured by the popularity, the early winner and the ultimate winner has been the dot com extension.
